Its usually really hard to make any art touching me inisde... But this one is totally different, I even dont know if that was the point of this work and if it has that deep meaning, but for me this is totally perfect and this mother will stay in my memory for so long.
As I commented above, I see a lot of oral themes. Oral aggression in the infant depicted as a greedy animal, oral pleasure as depicted by the nipples and the food on the ground (again, oral aggression here as well) as well as the cigarette (as a substitute for oral pleasure). An interesting tension in the infants wish to be fed and it's denial of the food on the plate (the food on the plate as a substitute for the breast), the mother's (?) refusal of the breast (and thus of a symbiotic merging), the obvious distress in both, the infant-animal and the mother. I like how the yellow, color of envy, further explores that what the infant wishes to have is that which the mother is withholding (the breast) (envy because the mother has what the infant doesn't have but wishes for).
This, of course, would be a psychoanalytic reading of this piece and certainly isn't the only viable interpretation.
